Beginner Woodworking Projects
Q. How do I come up with ideas for projects?
A. For a beginner, woodworking ideas may seem a little difficult to find. There may be plenty of projects you would like to start on, but how do you to know if the project will be too difficult to complete? I find a good rule of thumb is to keep things small, a birdhouse, picture frame or simple stool are perfect starter projects. The skills you learn on such projects will build a strong foundation for a much larger project such as a shed or a deck.
Q. What tools do I need to get started and are they expensive?
A. Beginner woodworking tools don’t need to be the top of the range, or even new for that matter. All of my best tools are more than 3 years old, they are well kept and good as new. To begin your collection, you should have a 6″ layout square, a claw hammer, a good set of screwdrivers and a 25′ retractable tape measure, all of which are very inexpensive to buy. Once you’re used to working with these tools, you can get yourself a a chisel set, a utility knife, a block plane and a level. Just about any job can be carried out with this basic set of tools.
Beginner woodworking projects don’t need to be frustrating to get into. The questions answered in this article should help you to focus on the next steps to take to get your wood project under way.
